Spy School

Day trips and residential trips suitable for KS3 and KS4 students

Students work in small groups to visit crime scenes and gather evidence then enter real laboratories at Liverpool Science Park to perform their own analysis. Teams will be allocated different crimes that will require different laboratory techniques to solve. Some groups will perform DNA finger printing, bloody typing, bacterial or finger print analysis, plus some crimes will involve secret surveillance and inspection of surveillance videos. There is also the opportunity for students to solve cyber fraud for groups interested in computer science.

The range of crimes allows students on the shorter courses to share their results with the rest of the group on the final day (or back at school on the 1 day trip). On the longer courses, each student will have the opportunity to investigate a range of different crimes to expand their skills set and put their theoretical studies into practice.

Students will have to work together and follow clues to sites around Liverpool, visiting some of the city’s famous landmarks collecting evidence along the way.

Typical Course Outline

On the first morning Students arrive at Liverpool Science Park for their laboratory induction and training on how to prepare and store their evidence. After the introduction students are split into teams of 4 (allocated by teachers before arrival) and assigned their individuals crime packs. This is where the fun really starts!

Crime packs will send students to different sites throughout the city (with their BioGrad Spy Supervisors and teachers). Students will be required to conduct surveillance, collect evidence and interview suspects (dependent upon the crime pack selected) then, return to the laboratory at Liverpool Science Park and perform their own analysis to discover the criminal!

A range of crime packs are available for 5 locations throughout the city (see locations below). On the 5 day trip some of the crime packs will be linked, requiring students to visit 3 different crime scenes over 3 days in order to solve the crime.

Each crime pack includes all the necessary protective equipment and consumables to collect evidence and surveillance equipment required (plus a packed lunch for students on residential courses). Travel to crime scenes outside of the city centre will be undertaken by the BioGrad Forensic Training mini bus.

Students will be marking and protecting crime scenes, collecting blood samples, hair samples, fingerprints, footprint casts and also collecting debris and environmental samples. In the laboratory students will be performing DNA fingerprinting, blood typing, microbial analysis and microscopy, plus monitoring surveillance footage.

WHAT DO OUR STUDENTS SAY?

  • “My lab tutor was a skilful and talented teacher. He was able to simplify complex topics so all of the students could understand and then followed up to ensure we all fully grasped the techniques being taught. He made sure that any errors were rectified immediately so that we were always learning the correct techniques"
    Lucy - Introduction to Genetics
  • "I attended the course because I wanted to work in the pharmaceutical industry but didn't have enough lab based experience. After the course I had experience in some of the most up to date techniques, taught by researchers working in the pharmaceutical industry. During the lunch time I was able to chat with all of the tutors and seek their advice for securing the job I wanted. Through the experience and advice I received I managed to secure a graduate level job in a small pharmaceutical company. I cannot recommend this course enough!"
Josep (Graduate researcher) - Practical skills in drug discovery
  • "I received excellent tuition from a patient teacher who had an incredible enthusiasm for laboratory research. Under her tutelage and supervision, I acquired many laboratory skills in the area of cell culture techniques and high throughput screening for pre-clinical drug discovery."
Akang (Research Scientist) - Introduction to mammalian cell culture and Practical drug discovery
  • "This was the first time I had the chance to perform practical laboratory techniques which I had only seen in lectures before this point. The tutors let us try a number of different ways to quantify cells and gave us the time and guidance to perfect our own techniques."
Mark - Introduction to mammalian cell culture
  • "I was taught by an experienced researcher who gave us the opportunity to work with many different cell types. I was able to see the differences between the morphology and growth rates of different cells for myself. I also had the opportunity to try a number of different techniques which gave me confidence to apply for PhD's requiring cell culture experience."
Gail (PhD researcher) - Introduction to mammalian cell culture
