Practical Genetics – Teacher CPD course

1 Day CPD course for KS5 science teachers

We know that teaching advanced principles such as DNA amplification and gel electrophoresis is difficult, especially if you have not had the opportunity to run your own samples in a while (or ever). This course provides A-level science teachers with the opportunity to enter a working research laboratory, extract DNA, perform PCR and run their samples using gel electrophoresis. The course can be used as a stand alone CPD course or, if teachers would like to take the BioGrad lesson plans back to their schools they can hire all of the equipment and reagents required in one easy package.

Equipment hire is competitively priced to allow teachers from all schools to integrate practical lessons in their own classrooms (short term and long term hire options are available).

You will learn how to extract and purify DNA using modern laboratory methods, use extracted DNA in a polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and obtain the results by agarose gel electrophoresis. You will also be introduced to free online programmes for primer design to support classroom learning.

The course covers practical training in the below areas:

  • Genetics Risk Assessment and COSHH
  • Extraction of DNA
  • Preparation of PCR mix
  • Computer activity: design and check a set of PCR primers
  • Agarose gel electrophoresis of PCR samples
  • Discussion of results and lesson plans

Liverpool Science Park

BioGrad’s state of the art laboratories are centrally located, adjacent to Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and within 7 minutes’ walk of both Central and Lime Street Train Stations.

Mount Pleasant car park 4 minutes’ walk from the laboratory and costs £4 per day.

Attendees should report to the main reception on Mount Pleasant (at the bottom of the Cathedral steps) upon arrival at the Science Park.

Clothing and Equipment

Attendees are advised to wear comfortable clothes and shoes (ensuring legs and feet are covered when in the laboratory). We advise layered clothing as it can become warm when wearing a lab coat and gloves all day.

All personal protective equipment is provided during the course however attendees should bring a note book for recording their results.

Pre-requisites

This course introduces practical molecular biology skills and we expect that attendees understand how to use basic laboratory equipment, make stock solutions, follow UK H&S policies including Risk Assessments and COSHH.

The 1 day laboratory skills short course can act as a pre-curser for those who need a laboratory refresher.

Food

Refreshments, lunch and snacks are provided during the course. Vegetarian options are provided as standard however please inform BioGrad of any additional dietary requirements at the time of booking.

Attendees wishing to bring their own food or snacks have access to a fridge and microwave during the course, plus a break room containing vending machines and TV should they wish to dine separately.

Practical Genetics Reagent Kit:

Practical Genetics kits include all the reagents required to perform DNA extraction, amplification and visualisation practical sessions for 42 DNA samples and are suitable for schools that already have their own equipment. Each reagent kit includes safe DNA dyes, agarose tablets, sequencing buffers, PCR mix and DNA ladders. Reagents are stable for 12 months when stored correctly, however if you would like to delay delivery until September, please make a note at the time of booking. Equipment Hire

Schools may rent a thermo cycler, 2 x gel tanks with power packs and a blue light LED illuminator for 2 weeks or 9 months. Please contact info@biograd.co.uk or 0151 482 9695 for availability and to place a booking.

Equipment Purchase

The genetics equipment is small and could be easily moved between schools. Under the rental agreement equipment must not be moved, however schools or Multi Academy trusts may purchase their own equipment from BioGrad and train teachers from multiple schools on its use. The equipment could then easily be shared between schools to provide excellent opportunities for large numbers of students for many years to come.

Career Development workshops

We see many graduates with a degree that does not support them in their chosen career, or graduates that enter one kind of research only to realise that it does not meet their expectations. Our career development workshops aim to engage with KS4 and KS5 students BEFORE they make their decision on which A-Level courses or undergraduate programmes to attend.

BioGrad scientists will visit your school to offer a half-day workshop called ‘what do scientists REALLY do all day?’, to give accurate information on the job roles available and the pathways into each of these roles. After the morning workshop students may book 1:1 meetings with the scientists to answer any further questions.

There is no limitation on the number of students attending the workshop however schools should provide a suitable room with facilities to deliver a presentation, plus rooms for 1:1 meetings.
